The Prince: Chapter 15

“So, I’m sort of confused. I’m the son of a legend. Wouldn’t the Nachos be happy to see me? They seem… almost scared.”

Matt looked down at the ground, avoiding my eyes.

“Let me tell you something, Josh. Many soldiers, especially well-known, important ones, like your father, don’t have children. Can you guess why?”

I racked my brain.

Then, it came to me.

“I’m a weakness,” I said, my heart sinking.

“Exactly,” Matt said. “Person would do anything, anything, for you. So what would happen if you were captured?”

My heart sank even more as I mulled over Matt’s words.

“So it would just be easier to kill me?”

“Yes.”

“He killed the Butcher,” Matt said.

“What?” Cooper said. “That’s not possible. He’s one our best soldiers, and certainly the best axe wielder we have.”

“Had,” Matt corrected him. “I saw it with my own eyes.”

I remembered the giant man with the axe who had come at me. I remember the absolute power that had rushed through me, the energy that had caused me to kill him with one stroke of my sword.

Everyone exchanged nervous, or even frightened, looks. Tanman, who was sitting next to me on the couch, scooted away from me.

“Anyway,” Billy said slowly, “Continue.”

“That’s it, really,” I said. “I was knocked out by a Nacho soldier, and I woke up in the forest with the Nachos.”

“Well, there’s no sense of hiding it,” Miroos said quietly.

“Hail, Joshua, the Prince, son of the King, the leader of the Nachos, the legend, Person1233.”

“Let us help you, Prince,” the man said, smiling slightly.

Prince. The word echoed in my head. I recalled the words of the letter I had found back at the ACP base.

Dear May,

There is a Prince. No one told us of a son of the King. I am sure of it. He is in my group. He looks exactly like him. He came 2 and a half spitzes ago. They gave him the cat, thought he was an arachnid. I know Peng has got an eye on him.

Tell my buddy I lost a card game because I got one of him.

Matt

The letter wasn’t about Tylund.

It was about me.

But how?

Something caught my eye. A gleam in one of the trees, along with the tip of something pointy.

I heard a whizzing sound, and then a thunk that sounded very close to me.

The man next to me groaned. An arrow was sticking out of his back. Blood splattered on the fingertips of my left hand.

More whizzing sounds. More thumps. More groans. Screams.

Nachos leaped out of the forest.

We had planned to ambush the Nachos.

And yet, they were ambushing us.
